European Drug Report 2016 Press Release

On 31st May 2016 the Anti-Drugs Council of Cyprus presented the 2016 European Drug Report published by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and Europol.

The Report provides a comprehensive analysis of the latest trends in drug supply and the market; drug use prevalence and trends; and drug-related health problems and responses to them. Presenting the report’s findings, Dr Roland Simon (Head of Unit on Consequences, responses and best practices at EMCDDA) explained that cannabis remains the prominent drug used by young people across Europe and this is reflected in the drugs market which shows that 80% of all seizures are related to cannabis. Furthermore around 24 billion euro is spent on drugs, with 38% being related to cannabis. An emerging issue is the increasing number of acute intoxications related to MDMA which has doubled in potency between 2010 and 2014. Finally, in 2015 the Early Warning System identified 98 new psychoactive substances out of which synthetic cannabinoids form the highest percentage.
